Diamond Mind: A Kundalini Yoga Workshop To Improve Memory And Cognition

Mindfulness is about focusing attention on the present moment, and practicing mindfulness has been shown to rewire the brain so that attention is stronger in everyday life

Kim Willment, Neuropsychologist, Brigham and Women's Hospital.

Technology offers many gifts, but as we constantly check our phones, chat, or doom scroll through kitten videos, we are apt to slip into what Thich Nhat Hanh calls a state of continuous partial attention, where our minds are neither fully engaged nor completely at rest.

Our most precious gift is full attention. Of course, such intense focus requires practice and discipline. Modern science is now confirming what yogis have known for hundreds of years: mindfulness, cognitive training, and a healthy lifestyle. These are the three strategies recommended by Harvard Medical School to support cognition. Kundalini Yoga, as we know, offers all three!

Cognition and memory are distributed through all systems, and this is where Kundalini excels. Rather than working with just the mind, or just the body, Kundalini Kriyas work through all bodily systems at once. The physical postures teach us to switch between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, chanting mantra fires up the hypothalamus and pineal glands right above the soft palate, pranayamas clear the lungs and bring breath through the nose. We pump the circulatory system, massage our internal organs, help the lymphatic system clear out toxins, and of course, we meditate.

In this workshop, we’ll work through Bhramari and Kirtan Kriya, each of which has been proven to support cognition and memory. We’ll also practice the wonderful Kriya for Becoming Crystal Clear. You’ll leave with a set of proven strategies that you can take home with you to support  cognition and memory in your own practice.
