Moulin Rouge! (25th Anniversary Screening)
No Laws. No Limits. One Rule. Never Fall In Love.
2001 | PG-13 | Australia, United States of America | Baz Luhrmann | English, Español, Français | 128 minutes
Ewan McGregor stars as Christian, a young Englishman who leaves behind his bourgeois father during the French belle époque of the late 1890s to seek his fortunes in the bohemian underworld of Montmartre. Here, Christian meets the absinthe- and alcohol-addicted artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (John Leguizamo), who introduces him to a world of sex, drugs, music, theater, and the scandalous dance known as the cancan at the Moulin Rouge, a decadent dance hall, brothel, and theater that’s the brainchild of Harold ZidlerHowever (Jim Broadbent), and quickly becomes completely infatuated with the beautiful singer and courtesan Satine (Nicole Kidman, in a career-high). However, she has been promised by the manager to a Duke – in return for funding his next production. As the young lovers meet in secret, Satine’s wedding day draws closer but she hides a fatal secret from both Christian and the Duke. The film seamlessly weaves contemporary songs by Nirvana, Madonna, the Beatles, and Queen into a sparkling confection, loosely based on the opera “Orpheus in the Underworld.” With Richard Roxburgh, Kylie Minogue.

Purple Rain
Before he created the magic, he lived every bit of it.
1984 | 18A | United States of America | Albert Magnoli | English | 111 minutes
The Rio Theatre’s patented Friday Late Night Movie series continues on February 27 with a screening of The Purple One‘s cinematic and musical triumph, PURPLE RAIN. Gorgeously remastered and restored for its 40th Anniversary in 2024, this is the singular, indelible rock musical for which Prince took home both Oscar and Grammy gold.
We’re turning the volume up for this one, children. (Get ready to go crazy with the beautiful ones in the Rio Theatre audience – 80’s-inspired attire is very welcome, and oh-so-very encouraged. You best be wearing purple, people!)
Based loosely on his own life story, Prince‘s film debut in PURPLE RAIN cast him as “The Kid,” the talented but troubled musician in Minneapolis struggling to make it big with his band, The Revolution. The film was a box office hit, and possessed a fantastic soundtrack (including Oscar-winner ‘When Doves Cry’) that forever altered the course of his career. Many fans and critics consider the music of PURPLE RAIN signature work, spawning numerous hit singles that would dominate airwaves for years to come.

The Librarians (With Post-Show Panel Discussion)
NR | United States of America | Kim A. Snyder | English | 92 minutes
THE LIBRARIANS offers a rattling look at coordinated efforts to ban books. More importantly, it introduces viewers to the everyday and increasingly vital heroes pushing back: the librarians who sound the alarm to both legislative and grassroots attempts to pull books from school and public libraries.
In Texas, the Krause List targets 850 books focused on race and LGBTQIA+ stories – triggering sweeping book bans across the U.S. at an unprecedented rate. As tensions escalate, librarians connect the dots from heated school and library board meetings nationwide to lay bare the underpinnings of White Christian Nationalism fueling the censorship efforts. Despite facing harassment, threats, and laws aimed at criminalizing their work – the librarians’ rallying cry for freedom to read is a chilling cautionary tale.
