Queer/Trans + Allies Photowalk

  • UBC Aquatic Centre 6080 Student Union Boulevard University Endowment Lands, British Columbia, V6T 1Z1 Canada (map)

A group Photowalk for LGTBQIA2S+ folks who identify as having lived experience with mental health and/or addictions challenges.

Queer Photo Walks is a series of safe, sober, and accessible walks happening in Vancouver during September 2026. LGTBQIA2S+ folks and allies can socialize, learn and share camera skills, and get out and explore the city!

Each walk will take place in a different Vancouver neighbourhood; attendance is capped at 20 people per walk, and tickets are free. The Queer Photowalk series is open to participants who have had/have experience living with mental health and/or addictions challenges.

For this walk, we'll meet up on the north side of Grandview Park, and walk along Commercial Drive and surrounding area.

Everyone is welcome to bring their own camera gear and/or phone along on the walk. There will be a limited number of SLR-type cameras and 35mm film to try out and learn on during the walks, and instruction is available for beginners or those who need a refresher.

Note: If you are bringing your own film gear, please also bring a role of film to shoot.

What to expect:

Walks will be roughly 90 minutes in length, with a mid-point break for an included light snack and bathroom access. You do not have to stay for the duration of the walk, although everyone must check in at the starting location. It's recommended to bring a water bottle, and dress/prepare for the weather. In the event of extreme heat or rain, the Photowalk will be cancelled.

For the shared cameras: a limited amount of film and processing/scanning is available during the Photowalk series. Images on the shared cameras will be uploaded to a public social media platform for all to view. Keep in mind when taking pictures of others to ask for permission beforehand.

What is expected of participants:

The Photowalk series is a relaxed, inclusive, and positive environment. We ask that participants treat each other with kindness, respect, and patience. Any person who is acting in a way that is making others in the group feel uncomfortable will be asked to leave the event.

Please also keep in mind that this is a space where people dealing with addiction are accessing; we ask that you do not come to the space if you have recently used or are under the effects of substances.

Lastly, consent is key! Please ask before you:

-Touch another person (including hugs)

-Take a photo of another person, within or outside the group

-Take a tool/equipment from someone's hand(s)

Thanks for reading through the event details. If you have any questions, or would like to communicate your access needs, email theconversationpit@yahoo.ca. Due to insurance purposes, participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a legal guardian.

Look forward to seeing you on the walk!
