Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside Welcomes the 23rd Annual Heart of the City Festival
For over two decades, the Downtown Eastside (DTES) Heart of the City Festival has served as an anchor for local storytelling, ancestral memory, and artistic resistance. Vancouver Moving Theatre, in association with the Carnegie Community Centre and the Association of United Ukrainian Canadians, presents the 23rd annual gathering from Friday, October 30 to Saturday, November 7, 2026.
Rooted in a commitment to listen and learn from the neighborhood, the 2026 festival centers on the theme of Belonging—the shared experience of being seen, heard, respected, and valued. Across more than 30 local venues, the nine-day schedule features over 100 events, ranging from music and theater to activism forums, history tours, and visual art.
Queer Highlights
The festival program reflects the deep intersections of the 22SLGBTQI+ community, peer-led advocacy, and local history throughout the DTES.
Drag Storytime Sing-along!: Celebrating six years with the festival, this all-inclusive event features jazz from Magic Triangle and folk-punk hijinks with Legion of Flying Monkeys. Hosted by bearded lady Drag Satan, the afternoon includes community awards and a costume celebration. (Saturday, October 31, 4:00 PM at MacLean Park)
Indigenous Exhibition and Celebration: Hosted by Two-Spirit Grass Dancer Larissa Healey, Women’s Northern Traditional dancer Tanisha Shawna Pahtayken, and Pow Wow Dancer Pavel Desjarlais, this event highlights traditional dance and culture. (Details in full program schedule)
Life at OPS: A collection of short films and videos by Nathaniel Canuel documenting the day-to-day work and community at the Overdose Prevention Society, the busiest peer-led supervised consumption site in Canada. (Friday, November 6, 7:30 PM at SFU Djavad Mowafaghian Cinema)
1984:AGAIN: Theatre Terrific presents a gripping adaptation of George Orwell's classic, framing human connection and forbidden romance as acts of collective defiance against absolute surveillance. (Friday, November 6, 5:00 PM at SFU Djavad Mowafaghian World Arts Centre)
Solo Solo Together: All Bodies Dance Project showcases new solo works by Susie Gray, Nico Gruzling, Lance Lim, Peggy Leung, and Old Baby, exploring individual perspectives within a shared artistic community. (Friday, November 6, 1:00 PM at SFU Djavad Mowafaghian World Arts Centre)
