Written in the Stars: Queering the Zodiac

by Jude Goodwin

Astrology offers a celestial mirror for our lives, reflecting a spectrum of identities and expressions as diverse as the constellations. I thought it would be fun to look at sun signs through a queer lens. Keep in mind, your astrological ‘sign’ is the placement of the sun at the moment of your birth. If you know your ‘rising sign’ as well, read both! If you’re interested in learning more about astrology, be sure to read our article What is Astrology

The Queer Aries

Aries (March 21 – April 19) energy provides the spark that galvanizes community momentum. In the 2SLGBTQiA+ world, the Queer Aries is the ultimate starter, often the first to arrive at a protest and the first to jump on a go-go box when the dance floor needs a jumpstart. Known for their "bravado" and assertive nature, they rush head-first into action to start new projects. Whether they are leading a queer hockey team or organizing a new resource centre, their presence is a direct statement of confidence.

The Queer Taurus

The Queer Taurus (April 20 – May 20) builds a sanctuary of style, comfort, and tactile joy. This sign values the sensory experience of life, from the intricate linework of a new tattoo to the gourmet spread at a chosen family dinner. In the local scene, a Taurus is often the anchor of the queer craft fair, ensuring artists are celebrated and the environment remains impeccable. While they may be slow to retire a favourite vintage leather jacket, their commitment to creating inclusive, healing spaces is unwavering.

The Queer Gemini

The Queer Gemini (May 21 – June 20) is the ultimate community connector, often described as the social butterfly of the zodiac. They flit from the DJ booth to the VIP lounge without ever really settling in one spot, thriving on variety and social dexterity. As an air sign, they navigate different circles with a fluid ease that makes them excellent mediators. They are the ones who know every contemporary anthem and use their social energy to keep the conversation—and the party—moving.

The Queer Cancer

The Queer Cancer (June 21 – July 22) is the emotional heart and the protector of the chosen family. They focus on the restorative power of connection, turning their living room into a hub for post-Pride recovery and playdates for their beloved fur babies. A Cancer understands that community is built on care, providing a reliable and soft place to land for those navigating the complexities of identity. They prioritize an environment where everyone feels respected and dignified within their inner circle.

The Queer Leo

The spotlight finds the Queer Leo (July 23 – August 22) because they create it. Leos bring main character energy to every stage, whether performing a high-concept drag routine or leading a community workshop with flair. They affirm their presence with a vibrancy that demands celebration and serve as a fierce protector of their community. A Leo is often the first to challenge oppressive remarks, serving as a living reminder that 2SLGBTQiA+ lives are meant to be celebrated out loud.

The Queer Virgo

Attention to detail meets passion in the Queer Virgo (August 23 – September 22). They keep the community running, from managing the local queer sports league schedule to ensuring art show credits are perfectly accurate. A Virgo has no patience for disorganized protests or judgey labels. Their contribution is found in the systemic structures they build—such as community fridges or resource databases—that support the long-term health and wellness of the entire 2SLGBTQiA+ collective.

The Queer Libra

The Queer Libra (September 23 – October 22) balances social justice with impeccable style. They are the diplomats of the zodiac, seeking to unify our diverse community through art and collaborative design. A Libra is often the aesthetic mastermind behind the most impressive parade floats and the mediator who keeps the community group chat harmonious. They work to ensure the beauty they create is inclusive of all intersectional identities, making the movement as visually stunning as it is impactful.

The Queer Scorpio

The Queer Scorpio (October 23 – November 21) represents deep transformation and reclaimed power. Often found behind the needle in a queer-owned tattoo studio, they understand that our bodies are canvases for our history and resistance. Scorpios value the lived reality of identity and the ongoing work of decolonization. They use their intensity to dismantle cisheterosexism, turning personal evolution into a tool for community liberation.

The Queer Sagittarius

The Queer Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21) seeks new horizons and radical truths. They are often the first to pack a bag for international Prides or rural queer retreats. You’ll find them hosting late-night salons to discuss queer philosophy or planning the next community hike. They value freedom and honesty, bringing a sense of optimism to the hardest fights and always pushing the community to look toward the next frontier. A fire sign that loves adventure, you’ll find the queer Sags filling the decks of Olivia Cruises or the lifting paddles in a rainbow kayak tour.

The Queer Capricorn

The Queer Capricorn (December 22 – January 19) is the architect of lasting change. They understand that building a movement requires intentional, meaningful action and institutional memory. Whether running a non-profit or mentoring younger community members in trade crafts, Capricorns focus on building a legacy. They ensure that queer spaces are financially sustainable and that the progress made today lasts for generations to come. Capricorns are the working executives of the zodiac, the ‘daddys’ and dare we say, the doms.

The Queer Aquarius

Revolutionary spirit guides the Queer Aquarius. They are visionaries who introduce experimental art and concepts that challenge outdated social constructs. An Aquarius lives on the cutting edge, often expressing themselves through digital media or organizing to dismantle systems of colonization. They push for an inclusive community shorthand that acknowledges the unique histories of Two-Spirit and trans people. Aquarians have no trouble with alternative lifestyles and can be found in many poly, pan and fet communities.

The Queer Pisces

The Queer Pisces swims in the depths of collective empathy and artistic expression. They move through the world with a deep understanding that identities are fluid and that art has the power to bridge gaps between us. A Pisces is the sensitive poet, the painter, or the DJ who captures the soul of a moment. They value the spiritual and intellectual connections within the 2SLGBTQiA+ world, focusing on a potential for attraction and community that transcends traditional categories.
