DanceHouse Unveils Audacious 19th Season: A Global Journey at the Vancouver Playhouse

Vancouver’s premier contemporary dance presenter, DanceHouse, has officially pulled back the curtain on its 2026/27 season. The lineup is a globe-spanning collection of five evocative performances that range from the depths of the ocean to the intricate philosophy of the Kama Sutra.

Running from October 2026 through April 2027, the season features world-leading companies from Canada, the UK, Sweden, and India, all taking the stage at the Vancouver Playhouse.

The 2026/27 Lineup

ODE – Compagnie Catherine Gaudet (Montréal)

  • Dates: October 23 & 24, 2026 (BC Premiere)

  • The Vibe: A visceral exploration of the "industrial happiness complex." Gaudet’s work uses a stripped-down, repetitive choral chant to examine group-think, conformity, and the fragile hope that remains in the wake of cultural collapse.

Knitting Peace – Cirkus Cirkör (Sweden)

  • Dates: January 27–30, 2027 (Canadian Premiere)

  • The Vibe: Co-presented with The Cultch, this contemporary circus spectacle uses massive amounts of rope and recycled yarn to create an acrobatic world. It’s a literal and metaphorical examination of what it means to be "hanging by a thread" and how we bind together to find liberation.

Forbidden – Aditi Mangaldas Dance Company (India)

  • Dates: February 26 & 27, 2027 (North American Premiere)

  • The Vibe: Partnering with the Indian Summer Festival, this solo work bridges classical Kathak tradition and contemporary inquiry. Inspired by the Kama Sutra, Mangaldas explores female sexuality and carnal beauty, casting aside the mantle of shame in favor of incandescent pleasure.

Assembly Hall – Kidd Pivot (Vancouver)

  • Dates: March 17–20, 2027

  • The Vibe: Back by popular demand, the Olivier Award-winning work from Crystal Pite and her team (creators of Betroffenheit) returns home. Set in a community hall that shifts into a mythic realm, eight performers explore our primal need to congregate, belong, and the painful reality of exile.

Deepstaria – Company Wayne McGregor (UK)

  • Dates: April 15–17, 2027 (BC Premiere)

  • The Vibe: Taking its name from a rare deep-sea jellyfish, McGregor’s masterwork explores the "abyss." Using tech-forward visuals and movement that mimics the peristaltic motion of undersea creatures, the piece is a highly sensory meditation on the existential void.
