Vancouver Folk Music Festival

The Vancouver Folk Music Festival (VFMF) is returning to the shores of Jericho Beach Park this July, and the 49th edition promises a lineup that is as socially conscious as it is musically diverse. For the local community, the festival has long been more than just a series of concerts; it is a space where the intersection of art and activism is celebrated openly.

This year’s roster is particularly notable for its strong representation of queer voices and stories, bringing global perspectives on identity and equity to the local stage.

Queer Voices on Stage

Among the most anticipated acts is Brazilian powerhouse Bia Ferreira. Self-described as an "artivist," Ferreira’s music—which she calls "MMP" (Música de Mulher Preta)—is a fearless blend of gospel, rap, and reggae. Her work is a direct manifesto of queer-feminist pride, specifically centered on the experiences of Black lesbian women. Watching her perform is both a musical masterclass and a powerful act of resistance.

Joining the lineup is indie-folk sensation Ruby Waters. Known for her gravelly vocals and raw, honest storytelling, Waters brings a refreshing level of sex positivity and queer visibility to the indie scene. Her music often explores the complexities of modern relationships and identity with a candidness that resonates deeply with younger audiences.

Local favorite Haley Blais also brings her signature "nostalgia-pop" to the festival. As a staple of the Vancouver music scene, Blais has built a dedicated following through her diaristic lyrics that capture the awkward, beautiful, and often queer-coded nuances of daily life.

Allyship and Community

The spirit of inclusion extends to the festival's legendary veterans. Billy Bragg, a long-time champion of LGBTQ+ rights, remains a focal point for those who believe music can change the world. His commitment to trans-inclusive activism and his history of performing at Pride events globally reinforce the festival's role as a safe and welcoming space.

Beyond the main stages, the Community Village will serve as a hub for local non-profits and grassroots organizations. This area often provides a platform for regional advocacy groups, ensuring that the conversations happening between sets are as impactful as the music itself.

Whether you are there for the political folk anthems, the indie-pop vibes, or simply the community spirit, the VFMF continues to prove that the "folk" in folk music truly belongs to everyone.
